History

The Washington Wrestling Club (WWC) was founded in 1967 to promote the sport of wrestling in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, through team workouts, coaching, and competition. All styles of wrestling are practiced, including American Folkstyle wrestling (high school/scholastic and university/collegiate wrestling) and Olympic Freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling (classical style wrestling with no legs). Like many top adult teams around the nation, the WWC is currently affiliated with American University in Washington DC.

Club practices are for all ages, from high school age through masters. The goal of the club is to develop top competitors at the national level, supported by a feeder system beginning with high school athletes and adult beginners. All experience levels are welcome, from novice to national caliber. Members of the Washington Wrestling Club have won local and national medals in all styles of wrestling. As a team, we have won several major events, including: the Freestyle AAU high-school age group national championships, the masters national USSA Sombo team championships on several occasions, and placed third as a team in both the national AAU senior Greco-Roman and national USSA senior Sombo championships.

The club is affiliated with USA WRESTLING (USAW), the Potomac Valley Association of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and the United States Sombo Association (USSA). Through these organizations, the club maintains the best sport liability and accident insurance on the market today (including ten million dollars of liability coverage). WWC members are involved at significant levels with each of the organizations, as well as major equipment suppliers (Adidas, Brute, Nike).
